Cosima Bucarelli Non È Cercare Nuove Terre Ma Avere Nuovi Occhi

From 19 September 2026

Hypermaremma is pleased to present Non È Cercare Nuove Terre Ma Avere Nuovi Occhi, a new site-specific project by Cosima Bucarelli.

Non È Cercare Nuove Terre Ma Avere Nuovi Occhi is a title that Cosima Bucarelli came across by chance while reading a phrase by Marcel Proust carved into a tuff wall near Sovana. In that place, where writing seemed to merge with the stone and the landscape, the words took on a particular meaning for the artist: discovering something new does not necessarily require looking elsewhere, but rather learning to see what already exists through different eyes.

It is precisely through this approach that the artist engages with the Tomb of the Winged Demons in the Etruscan necropolis of Sovana, which becomes the starting point for the work, bringing ancient myth, material and the landscape of Cosa into dialogue. Dating from the second half of the third century BC, the tomb features on its pediment the figure of a winged sea demon with a fish-like tail, carved into the tuff and identified by sources as either Scylla or Triton. Drawing on this image, associated with funerary imagery and the passage into the afterlife, the artist develops a personal reflection on the figure of the siren.

Two tuff tails emerge from the ground: one barely outlined, retaining the raw materiality of the stone; the other defined by the addition of two copper fins. Rather than reproducing the archaeological reference, Bucarelli reworks it through an essential sculptural language, capable of reactivating the memory of the myth within the site of Cosa.

The work is completed through the gesture of those who encounter it: visitors are invited to offer it water, which flows from the sculpture into the ground, reaching the buried seed bombs — small spheres made of clay, compost and flower seeds.
